Criminal Record Check
A Criminal Record Check is a query into the centralized CPIC database using an individual's name, any aliases, and date of birth. This check requires the candidate's explicit consent.

CPIC/Canadian Police Information Centre
The CPIC database is a computerized information system operated by the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) providing Canadian law enforcement agencies with information on criminal activities. CPIC conducts searches and releases criminal record information for the purpose of BackCheck's pre-employment Criminal Record Checks.

Consent
Consent is required before BackCheck can complete any background checking services. Consent is most often obtained by signing a release form. In certain instances, it is obtained verbally from the candidate.

Alias
An alias is a name that a person may be known by, other than their given name commonly used for everyday purpose. Frequent examples include maiden names, middle names used as first names, nicknames, or common name misspellings. A criminal record check will reflect convictions under both given and alias names.

Pardon
A pardon in Canada is granted by the National Parole Board at an individual's request. It will remove criminal record charges from an individual's file so that a search of CPIC pardon will not show the existence of a criminal record, or that a pardon was issued. The law governing pardons in Canada is known as the Criminal Records Act.

Applicant Tracking System (ATS)
Otherwise known as Applicant Tracking System, an ATS is a software application used throughout the hiring process. It is an automated system for employers to track applicants and their information.

DA/Drivers Abstract
A DA is commonly required for employment opportunities that require employees to travel by motor vehicle. Inquiries are performed on a province to province basis, as each has their own specifications and requirements. Common results include suspended licenses, impaired driving charges, and other driving offences.

Diploma Mill
A diploma mill (or degree mill) is an organization that awards academic degrees and diplomas with substandard or no academic requirements and without recognition by official educational accrediting bodies.

PIPEDA
PIPEDA is the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act. It is a Canadian law related to data privacy, especially how it relates to electronic documents. It ensures that personal information is collected, used, and disclosed according to standards set by the Canadian government.
