BackCheck pilot project leads to fast roll-out for national retailer.
In early 2007 a national retailer piloted with BackCheck. The results proved compelling – BackCheck was revealing a criminal record check red flag rate of nearly 20%. Their competitors who were already using BackCheck were experiencing a red flag rate of around 7%. They clearly were getting a lot of the wrong kind of candidate. The company took immediate action and has since prevented the hiring of thousands of unsuitable candidates. Their red flag rate is now on par with all other retailers. |

In 2004, a lady in her mid-thirties applied to work at a call centre. On her BackCheck consent form, she claimed to having been convicted of assaulting her boyfriend. Our customer sent in the consent forms and is very glad that he did. It turns out that this candidate had 95 other convictions including theft, counterfeiting, forgery, fraud, armed robbery, drunk driving, and more! The lesson learned is that we shouldn’t trust the honesty of criminals.

Q: What is provided in your Criminal Record Check service?
A: BackCheck conducts criminal record checks based on the Name and Date of Birth of an applicant. These searches may provide an indication of the existence of the following types of information:
- Record of a criminal convictions, as the record exists on the date of search
- Convictions where a pardon has not been granted
- Absolute and conditional discharges where not prohibited by legislation
- Judicial orders (i.e. Probation orders and prohibition orders under the Criminal Code of Canada)
Please note: Specific details of a criminal record conviction cannot be released without fingerprint verification. Fingerprinting can be conducted by local police or accredited fingerprinting companies, whom BackCheck has partnered with for the convenience of our customers. Information provided as a result of this search will not include:
- Outstanding entries (i.e. charged and wanted person information)
- Convictions under Provincial Statues
- Pardoned offences
- Local records of other police services in Canada, where a conviction was not issued
- Cases where the applicant has been found guilty by reason of mental disorder
Q: What is BackCheck's typical turnaround time for Criminal Record Checks?
A: BackCheck returns your criminal record check results in 24hrs. Additionally, a 4hr rush service is available for checks.
Q: Is there any other criminal record information that may exist, that BackCheck may not obtain?
A: Local police services may have local police information that is not on CPIC, or that has not yet been entered into CPIC.
Q: Where do you get your information from?
A: The information given to our clients is provided by an authorized Canadian Police Agency. BackCheck works with numerous police departments across Canada to obtain Name-based Criminal Record Verifications from the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC). This is the only national source of criminal records in Canada.
Q: How do you satisfy privacy legislation?
A: BackCheck is committed to staying at the forefront of human rights, privacy, and employment legislation in order to ensure that the services we provide are fully compliant with all relevant legislation. To this end, BackCheck maintains a commitment to the highest level of privacy compliance and our entire process, from the development of consent forms to the secure environment within which we deliver reports to our clients, reflect this commitment.
BackCheck has an on-site Privacy Officer dedicated to ensuring BackCheck’s compliance with all applicable privacy legislation. In addition, BackCheck’s employees are trained at time of hire and refreshed biannually on our privacy policy and procedures. Furthermore, as a Canadian owned and operated business, BackCheck‘s records cannot be accessed under the terms of the USA PATRIOT Act. This is a benefit that assists our clients to be PIPEDA compliant.
Q: What process do you have to obtain information?
A: Typically, when candidates complete their application forms for employment with a BackCheck client, our client also asks the candidate to provide the necessary personal information to perform a Criminal Record Check. Once the candidate has provided the required information and provided signed consent for the check, BackCheck conducts the Criminal Record Check by utilizing the services of one of our police departments. Our contact at the police department will conduct the check, and report back to us in a timely fashion. BackCheck ensures the accuracy of results with numerous quality control measures, and returns the result to our client within one business day of receiving the request.
